Who will pay the cost when you go to a casualty unit?

A medical emergency is a condition that develops quickly, or occurs from an accident, and you need immediate medical treatment or an operation. In a medical emergency, your life could be in danger if you are not treated, or you could lose a limb or an organ. Casualty units give emergency care to people with severe trauma and illness who need the services and expertise available at a hospital.

The first few minutes after experiencing an accident, injury or illness are typically the most important – especially as you decide whom to trust with your medical care. Assessing the situation and deciding the best type of health care can be the most important step in getting the care you need, when and where you need it.

When should you go to the emergency room?

Always choose a casualty unit when you are faced with a severe, life-threatening condition. In a medical emergency, if you are admitted into hospital after visiting casualty and we approved your admission, we will pay the casualty account from the Hospital Benefit. You can call ER24 on 084 124 for paramedic or ambulance services.

Casualty units operate around-the-clock, giving you walk-in medical support and resources. However, if your condition is not life threatening, you will not be admitted to hospital. In that instance, we will pay the claims for the casualty unit from your Insured Out-of-Hospital Benefit.
